Day 3 VW Print 420 National Championships - Lyle Tresadern, Napier Sailing Club
Two
of the three scheduled races were sailed in the VW Print National 420
Championships and World Selection trials, held at Napier.
Regatta
leader Paul Snow-Hansen and crew Jason Saunders lost ground but
remained on top of the leaderboard. However the following three places
have tightened with only a single point separating the next three
competitors.
RACE 7
The
day started with a light westerly breeze which failed to fill in
resulting in a delay. The race finally got away an hour an a half later
in 7-8 knot sea breeze from the North-East, which gradually built
throughout the race. Leading at the first mark was Dunning-Beck with
Wornall close behind in second, Cooke third, and Stevens fourth. These
placings remained on the run and following beat with Beck leading the
fleet on to the first reach which he never relinquished. Both Cooke and
then Stevens managed to overtake Wornall on the final reach to the line
claiming second and third. Regatta leaders Snow-Hansen and Saunders
finished in 7th place.
RACE 8
Race
eight got underway in a decreasing breeze with crews only just
crouching on the trapeze wire off the start. The fleet split evenly
over the course with Maloney leading at the top mark, followed by
Wornall and Lardies in third. Maloney hung on to the lead during the
run to be first through the gate, followed by Lardies, Dunning-Beck and
then Wornall. During the second beat the breeze fell away to 4-6 knots.
Lardies kept his boat moving in the lighter conditions, sailing free,
and taking the lead at the top mark for the last time.
Lardies
held his lead finishing first followed by Maloney and Wornall with Emma
Goodwin crewing, satisfyingly claiming third spot from Dunning-beck and
her brother Ben Goodwin (crew). During the finish the dying breeze
shifted dramatically resulting in many boats having to drop spinnakers
and make a final tack to cross the line. Regatta leader, Snow-Hansen,
had a disappointing day finishing race 8 with a 10th placing.
The scheduled 9th race was never started as the dying breeze became too fickle for a start.
Overall
Paul Snow-Hansen and Jason Saunders hold an eight point lead but
Lardies, Cooke and first youth sailor Maloney are separated by only one
point.
The final day will be exciting with four races to be sailed to decide the contest.
